Blogging Principals
Topic: Blogs for School Leaders

Scott McLeod (Dangerously Irrelevant) is compiling a list of known principal blogs. It can be accessed using this link. The list is (sadly, but not surprisingly) quite short at this time. But hopefully, Scott's Principal Blogging Project will help change that (see my October 5 post). If you know a principal interested in trying out a blog as a means for disseminating information, please direct them toward the project.

I certainly know that daily blogging is a daunting task--I can't sustain that level of posting myself for more than a few weeks at a crack. However, even weekly or bi-weekly posts would send a powerful message to staff, parents, and students.

Administrators are technology gatekeepers, whether they mean to be or not. We need to get going here!

Get your Principal Blogging!
Topic: Blogs for School Leaders

I received the following email today. This could be a great way to encourage a non-blogging principal to give it a try!

Do you know a technology-inclined principal? Or a principal that would like to enhance communication with his or her local community?

The UCEA Center for the Advanced Study of Technology Leadership in Education (CASTLE) has initiated a project to create 100 new principal blogs in 100 days. Blogs are excellent tools for communicating with parents, publicizing school activities, and enhancing community satisfaction. Some superb examples include Meriwether Lewis Elementary (OR) and Mabry Middle School (GA).

CASTLE is looking for some principals who want to experiment with this new communication medium. Participants will be provided with a free blog and will receive ongoing support as they integrate their blogs into existing communication strategies. If you know a principal who might be interested, please pass this message along. More information about the Principal Blogging Project is available here:

Please share information about this project widely. Thanks!

Scott McLeod

A Couple More School Administrator Blogs
Topic: Blogs for School Leaders

Well, yesterday's post got me going again on my own quest to find blogging school administrators. So, I checked out a few that I've read in the past to see if the authors had stuck with it. Here's one that is still going strong:

Principal's Blog: Kevin Crotchett, Portland, OR

I found another that may be cheating (it looks as though the principal is writing, but someone else is actually posting). But here goes anyway.

Sky Blue Mesa Newsletter: Debbie Bohn, Canyon Country, CA

Both of these blogs are used primarily as newsletters, but I think that's okay.

I wish that Joyce Hooper (a principal in GA) had stuck with her blogging. She was actually interacting with her students and it was a very cool blog. You can see what was posted in 2005-06 at this link

Again, it's slim pickings out there. If you have any examples, please post!

Reading for the Labor Day Weekend
Topic: Blogs for School Leaders

It's just a little after 5 p.m., so I guess that means we're now officially into the Labor Day weekend. Before I shut down for the day, though, I wanted to post links to a couple of administrator blogs I read about today (thanks, Dean Shareski for posting these in a response on Scott's Dangerously Irrelevant blog).

Mr. P's Blog: Steve Poling, Tuscon, AZ

Edustange: Alan Stange, Saskatchewan, Canada

There! If you find yourself with nothing to do this weekend, take a peek at these blogs.

I'd like to find more examples. Please...if you know of a blog written by a school administrator, post the link here.

Thanks!

Blogging at NECC
Topic: Blogs for School Leaders
Once again the folks at NECC have assembled an impressive list of bloggers for the upcoming NCCE 2006 Conference July 5-7 in San Diego. They include David Warlick, Steve Dembo, and Will Richardson.

Hopefully you'll be able to attend the conference, but if not, plan to check out the conference blog!

Using a Weblog to Facilitate Paper Publishing
Topic: Blogs for School Leaders
In this post on the eSchoolNews leadership blog, Tim Lauer, an elementary school principal in Oregon, describes how he uses a blog to increase home/school communication. It's easy to do and an easy way for administrators to model technology use within the school community.

Why Don't School Administrators Blog?
Topic: Blogs for School Leaders
There's an interesting post on the Brain Frieze blog this morning asking why school administrators don't blog. Apparently someone is working on an article about this question. I've asked to see the finished article. If it's available electronically (it would be ironic if it isn't), I'll post a link here.

New Blog for Educators
Topic: Blogs for School Leaders
I received this e-mail yesterday and am passing the information along because I think this may be an interesting opportunity for school leaders to share ideas on a specific topic.

I’m in the process of doing research to finish up my Master’s degree. I thought that a blog would be an interesting way to gather thoughts, opinions and information about today’s learners. Please pass the blog address along if you know of someone who has something to offer on this. Thanks!

The Committed Sardine Blog
Topic: Blogs for School Leaders
For some time now, Ian Jukes has offered an online newsletter called the Committed Sardine. A couple of months ago, it faded into CyberSpace. Then tonight it reappeared. The Committed Sardine has been reborn as a blog.

Published fairly regularly, Ian collects articles about technology use in schools, writes a commentary on each piece (or invites other tech leaders to do so), and then puts it out there. An interesting read!
